As someone with kids, but who missed the original Pokemon craze the first time around – I was too old when it started – I’m kind of excited about this new game. Go allows you to get out with children, get some exercise and still have them really excited about games. And let’s not ignore the fact that I’m having a blast with it.
But like a lot of people who are freelance journalists, I sit at home and work during the day, and often have things to do in the evenings. All of this means that getting out is hard and playing Pokemon Go even more tricky. But perhaps I could employ this little cheat, thanks to a the You Tube channel “Bean ofthemonth“. It requires using a DJI Phantom drone, and some clever homebrew software to control a phone which is attached to the drone.
This gives you two clear advantages. Firstly, you can sit down and play the game while still visiting your local Gyms and PokeStops but there’s no need to leave the vicinity of your fridge and comfortable chair. And while I’m new to the whole Pokemon thing, I also understand that you need to cover a certain number of steps in order to hatch an egg. Different eggs need different distances, 2, 5 and 10km. I’ve already seen one report of someone hatching eggs on their model train set, so flying the phone on a drone should work too.
Of course virtually no actual information is given in the video. This might all be a nifty bit of fakery to capture some of those precious YouTube views. But of course all of this, including the video, is a bit of daft fun.
Sitting here watching the world lose its mind over Pokemon Go has been a nice break for me. In the India the game hasn’t yet released officially but hacks make playing it possible. Even so, it’s been a distraction from economic collapse as we blunder our way out of the European Union. Once it officially launches I’m throwing myself into this game full time – you can earn a living training Pokemon, right?
